The online community is fascinated by cosmetic procedures and enhancements. It’s no surprise then that when skincare ingredient volufiline began trending on TikTok as a “needle-free alternative to fillers,” aesthetics enthusiasts became keen on incorporating it into their regimens. This was especially true after well-known brands like Medicube and The Ordinary supported the trend. Whether it’s promises of fuller lips, more voluminous under-eye areas, or even an unintentionally bloated finger, volufiline has rapidly become a popular subject of conversation for its ostensibly noticeable outcomes. Nevertheless, dermatologists assert that the truth is not as straightforward as it seems.
Renowned for its capacity to optically enhance skin plumpness, volufiline operates by activating fat cells in regions where volume has diminished. Despite TikTok’s suggestions that it’s on par with butt augmentation and lip fillers, professionals argue that this isn’t necessarily the case. “Volufiline provides short-term, minor volume augmentation rather than enduring structural changes — since it’s an ingredient for topical use,” Dr. Robert Schwarcz, a certified plastic surgeon, clarifies to Hypebae.
Moreover, Dr. Schwarcz comments that equating volufiline to professional fillers is not only deceptive but it also overemphasizes its capabilities. “It lacks the ability to reconstruct lost facial fat, elevate sagging tissues, or contribute substantial volume in the way that professional dermal fillers can,” he notes. Beyond that, experts caution that its use should be approached with extreme caution, as the extended consequences remain largely unknown.
@skin_vestment Hey guys, long-time followers already know my fondness for volufiline! I apply it on my lips & under the eyes daily, and I witness a huge improvement in these areas. Consistency is everything! Every day I put the serum on my lips, cover them with a plastic lip mask (not mandatory) & let it seep in. After around 20 minutes, I put on a layer of Vaseline and let my lips soak it in! I definitely observe a difference #volufiline #lipcare #volufilineserum #lipbalm #antiaging ♬ Hot Air Balloon – Adam Woods
Besides its recent emergence in the beauty sector, volufiline is not yet approved by the FDA. “It is not an FDA-approved product and incorporating it into your skincare routine habitually is not suggested. I’d be very cautious about applying it to the face or definitely anywhere else on your body,” Dr. Douglas Monasebian, a board-certified plastic surgeon, indicates. While it’s frequently considered alongside other skincare products that contain more established ingredients, Dr. Monasebian points out that volufiline is strictly meant for aesthetic purposes, not for genuine skin welfare.
“It would be absurd to believe that your chest could be significantly enhanced with the topical application of any substance. It might offer momentary enhancement for some facial features, but we still remain uninformed of the long-lasting effects of this agent,” he adds. The crux of the matter is, applying a lotion or serum can never yield injection-level outcomes. Instead, volufiline should be used judiciously as an immediate solution for volume loss.
As with any hyped product, dermatologists recommend approaching with skepticism. When uncertain, perform a patch test and read labels meticulously before introducing any unfamiliar product to your everyday routine. Because despite TikTok’s claim that volufiline is “filler in a bottle,” professionals remain unconvinced — so perhaps you should too.
